How Often Should You Get a Dental Cleaning?

Team General Dentistry

Just like a car’s oil change, your kid’s school physical, and your annual eye checkup, you have to make a point to routinely visit the dentist. After all, a healthy mouth helps to keep your overall body healthy and feeling great, too.

So, how often should you get a dental cleaning? It is recommended that you have your teeth cleaned every 6 months - at least.

What Happens During a Cleaning?

Depending on your dentist’s usual practice, your cleaning appointment may also include x-rays, an oral cancer screening, and, of course, a dental examination. While the latter may be done every visit, the others may have a wider frequency.

With a dental cleaning, the primary focus is on getting rid of the tartar and plaque buildup on the teeth. You may brush diligently a couple of times every day and floss faithfully - and still have buildup on your teeth. If this is left alone, it can lead to cavities - and more in-depth tooth decay.

Carefully, the dental hygienist will remove the buildup from each of your teeth using special tools and techniques. Then, proceed with polishing your teeth using a rotating head and dental paste so that your teeth can feel super clean and shine.

Next up? Flossing. Your hygienist will floss your teeth - just like you do - but with a better view and a more thorough finish. When the cleaning is all done, you will rinse and spit to remove any remaining debris or polish from your mouth.

Your dental cleaning is preventative in the sense that if you have one routinely, it removes all the buildup and reduces the chance of cavities and other health issues. Your dental team can monitor your teeth and gums, giving you a dental examination once the cleaning is done.

The Importance of Dental Cleanings

While dentists love to see their patients’ smiling faces at their office, that isn’t why they ask you to come every 6 months. There are many reasons why dental cleanings are so important - and we are going to share them with you.

  • Enhance your appearance with a healthy, beautiful smile.
  • Kick bad breath to the curb.
  • Prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar, as well as dangerous bacteria.
  • Address dental problems early - before they become more complex and more expensive.
  • Brighten your smile as your cleaning removes discolorations.
  • Screening for oral cancer and catching it early boosts survival rates.

The best part is when you keep these appointments, you are giving yourself the best chance at having a lifetime of good oral health.
